What Are VDB Files?
VDB files are 3D volumetric assets for realistic effects like clouds, fire, or explosions. They’re pre-baked, skipping heavy sims, and work in Blender, Houdini, or Unreal. I used to fry my laptop on cloud sims—VDBs saved my sanity!
Perfect for cinematic skies or fiery blasts, they’re lightweight and customizable. Our collection’s built for Dune-style clouds or John Wick explosions. How dope is that?
Let’s dive into our 50+ VDB collection, starting with the top picks!
Free CC0 VDB Collection
Our 50+ VDB collection, released May 20–July 27, 2025, includes hero cumulus clouds, flamethrower effects, and gas explosions, all CC0 and ready at CGHEVEN’s VDB Files. I poured my heart into these for your epic shots!
No signup, multi-platform, and free. Below, I’m breaking down our best clouds, best fire VDBs, and best explosions. Ready to make your scenes slay?
Hero Cumulus Cloud VDBs
These hero cumulus clouds are fluffy, cinematic beasts for epic skies. They turned my indie short into a God of War sunset stunner. Perfect for films or game flythroughs.
Grab ‘em free at VDB Files. Set density to 0.1–0.5 for wispy or stormy vibes. How cool is that?
This towering cumulus gives bright, epic skies that scream God of War sunset. It made my fantasy short feel like Kratos was soaring above. Ideal for hero shots in films.
A dense, puffy cloud perfect for dramatic game cutscenes. It gave my sci-fi trailer that Dune desert storm vibe. Crank density to 0.3 for rich textures.
This bold, towering cloud fits cinematic flythroughs. It made my animation feel like Avatar’s floating mountains. Use density at 0.35 for rich details.
A frontal explosion for epic film moments. It gave my trailer that Dune fiery chaos. Crank density to 0.5 for massive impact.
How to Use VDB Files in Blender
Open Blender 3.6+ and toss that default cube. Go to File > Import > Volume (dot vdb) and load a VDB, like a cloud or explosion. I flubbed my first import—check your file path, yo, or you’ll be raging!
In Shading, add a Principled Volume node to Material Output’s Volume input. Set density (0.1–0.5) and scatter color to white for clouds or orange for fire/explosions.
Add a Sun Light (5000K) and an HDRI from CGHEVEN. Use Cycles, crank samples to 256+, and hit F12. Your scenes will slay like Dune!
Render Tips for Killer VDBs
Low step rate (0.05) for crisp clouds or explosions.
Density range (0.1–0.5) for wispy clouds or fiery blasts.
High samples (256+) for smooth, cinematic renders.
Cycles only; Eevee’s trash for volumetric VDBs.
Test with 128 samples to save render time.
