How to Use Explosion VFX in Blender

Open Blender 3.6+ and yeet that default cube. For VDBs (like gas explosions), go File > Import > Volume (dot vdb). For flipbooks (like cannon sparks), use Add > Image > Images as Planes. I botched my first import—check your file path, yo!

For VDBs, add a Principled Volume node to Material Output’s Volume input, set density (0.3–0.5), and use orange scatter for explosions. For flipbooks, use Transparent BSDF with alpha plugged into Alpha input, emission at 3–5.

Add a Sun Light (5000K) and an HDRI from CGHEVEN. Use Cycles for VDBs, Eevee for flipbooks, and hit F12. Your explosions will slay like John Wick!

Render Tips for Killer Explosion VFX

  • Density (0.3–0.5) for VDB explosions; emission (3–5) for flipbook sparks.
  • Use Cycles for VDBs, Eevee for flipbooks for faster renders.
  • High samples (256+) for smooth, cinematic VDB explosions.
  • Low step rate (0.05) for crisp volumetric details.
  • Test with 128 samples to save render time.
